The 2nd annual Magnetewan Lions Club Wild Game Dinner was once again a huge success. The menu consisted of Moose, Bear, Venison, Turtle Soup, Rabbit Stew, Fish, Turkey.....it was all awesome! Over 200 people attended the event and a good time was had by everyone. A great big thank you to all the individuals and businesses who donated items for the silent auction and raffle. And one great big thank you to everyone who put in countless hours in the preparation of a great meal.

Logging Arch for ATV's

I've previously posted articles on the logging arch by Norwood Industries and have noticed the interest from all over North America and beyond. I thought it was only right to post yet another article on this logging Arch for ATV's. This thing is a brute, if you're disappointed in it's abilities you must be trying to haul giant redwoods. Seriously folks this is one awesome piece of equipment, I have nothing bad to say about it, the only limitations are the power and gripping ability of your tires on you're quad. During March I will be dropping approximately sixty 26 foot red pine for my log cabin, and I already know that the logging arch will probably be pulling two logs at a time; each tree being approximately 20 inches at the butt and 26 feet long. Now how can you complain about that............and that's with a 400 Outlander Quad. So if you are still wondering....................Don't! Oh and no I don't work for nor am I sponsored by Norwood Industries.........yet!

During my career of working, and living what I would consider to be the greatest job in the world I have experienced more than the average outdoor enthusiast. This article is dedicated to my time spent employed as a Forest Officer with the Ministry of Forests in Stewart, British Columbia. This article is specifically dedicated to fishing Meziadin Lake, located in the interior of BC, 40 minutes from Stewart BC. If you ever find yourself in Stewart or on your way to the Yukon, or Alaska be sure to fish this lake. You can launch your boat at the Provincial park, and head straight across the lake, when you reach the far side, troll approximately 20 feet from shore and use a Cleo; no weight in 5 -10 ft of water. If you troll more than a half an hour without either catching a Dolly Varden or a Rainbow ....I can't help you.....lol . I can't tell you how many times and how many years this worked for me; the locals troll deep water, fish off the mouth of the creeks...........I used this method, would meet them back at camp and they'd say "Any Luck?" I'd simply say no, go help yourself to a cold one.........when they opened the cooler I'd get ........you " Jerk" What are you using? I'd simply reply "A Cleo"; to which they would say "What the heck is a Cleo" To which I would say ..."It's an Ontario lure for catching fish!" I used to laugh so hard, it made me cry. But seriously folks, this is one part of BC that is tuly amazing.

The photos say it all; our food plots are doing exactly what we had hoped. As soon as the colder weather hit and the snow began to fall, the deer moved in and have eaten all of the corn, all the soybeans, and have pawed and eaten the Brasika, Sugar beets......Awesome!

Deer Food Plots

Deer food plots are becoming very popular for property owners who are trying to not only help the local deer herd survive the winter months but to also provide high nutrient food all year long. In some areas deer populations are increasingly competing with Moose populations that are on the rise, which decreases the amount of browse available for the deer population. It's important to provide crops that will provide food at different times of the year. The photos below are just a few examples of the crops that deer utilize through the fall and winter months, as well as spring summer and fall.

This project also involved the planting of Hemlock three year old seedlings along trails and travel corridors to not only provide feed, but to also provide shelter and to lead deer from their bedding areas into the feed plots. They also planted red oak seedlings and some white pine seedlings.

The property owner also logged portions of the property to remove some of the older trees and to provide tops for winter forage. In subsequent years the food plots will be increased in size and location to provide food throughout the property, additional lime will be added to decrease the acidic conditions of the soils, and additional seedlings will be planted.
This project involved the planting of numerous different strips, including Frigid Forage, corn, soybeans, clover, sugar beets, carrots, and other mixtures specifically designed to provide food at different times of the year.

Moose Hunting 2010

Well my 2010 moose hunting season has come and gone. It was a beautiful week, fairly mild temperatures, not too much rain, full moon, and crisp mornings. It felt good to get out and experience the bush, spend time with family friends and fellow hunters. Although we weren't successful, I did have an encounter with an eleven point buck that was priceless. I had just arrived at my stand for the morning and noticed a fresh deer bed right where I was going to stand. Within minutes I caught a nose coming around a large Hemlock to my left, I remained motionless and this huge Whitetail emerged broadside at 15 yards. he was dark, huge, and had a sticker tine about 8 inches off his left side. He very cautiously continued to get closer; all of a sudden he stopped and looked directly at me, he knew there was something there, he just couldn't figure out what it was, he dropped his head and quickly raised it again trying to catch me. We played this game for about five minutes, I never moved. At the closest point he was 10vyards away, this moment made my hunt, even though I never saw a moose. It's great to experience such a magnificent animal in his domain.

Well after collecting wood and unloading and stacking it in the woodshed I thought it was time for me to bag my deer. I left the saw at the house, took the quad back to my grandmothers favorite stand, put out some feed, and climbed in the blind. Situated in the blind I felt the wind hitting me in the face. I thought to myself.......perfect, they will approach me from behind the blind. I no sooner got that thought out of my head.............and there he was right beside me..........25 feet.....wait for him to look the other way.......the rest is history. Nice little six point!

Well this was one of those hunts that you hear about but don't always experience. We were out cutting firewood, I was running the saw dropping a standing dead Cherry. I turned around and noticed the two guys I was with...........they were standing on the trail about fifty feet away. I noticed one of them down removing his gun from his guncase on the back of the quad. I'm thinking what the heck are they doing, this is no time to sight in your gun. I keep cutting up firewood..............bang! Ok; I shut the saw off and say "What the hell are you guys shootin at?" Their answer......."A deer.....a buck in fact" This buck came trotting right down the trail towards them and wasn't even aware of them, and not at the least scared by the saw. What a marketing slogan............"Our saws attract deer!"

I for one have my own thoughts but lets see what we hear from the camps in Ontario Wildlife Management unit 49. I love statistics....you can put a bunch of numbers out there, present graphs and come to some way off conclusion based on your interpretation of the data you collected, Under "Black Bears " you are suggesting to all camps that there was a "Localized Overharvest" in part of Management Unit 49............ it' seems to me that it's pretty hard to shoot bears if you don't see them; you also don't state that what you have determined to be "Overharvest" doesn't mention the number of bears in that area of 49 that were passed up, missed, not shot at and photographed on trail cams............that my friend is cold hard numbers.........don't be so quick to jump to conclusions without accepting offers to observe the facts! Either present all the facts or don't present any........your conclusions on bear management in Unit 49 is very off the wall.........! And yes I know the area very well.......

An open letter, with personal comments and observations to Outdoors Ontario regarding the MNR 2009 Report To Hunt Camps.

I read with interest, the above noted report with respect to the bear harvest, that was published on the Outdoors Ontario Blog. Of special interest and concern to me were comments made about “indications of a localized over-harvest in a portion of WMU 49”. I do believe that, Mr. Black, the author of the report was referring to a group of bear hunters, of which I am a member. The report indicates that a guideline of 350 to 400 bears may be sustainably harvested from the WMU and that in fact 362 bears were harvested during the 2008 hunting season. This would appear to fall well within the guidelines as set out by the MNR. Our hunting group began to prepare for our bear hunt in mid July of 2008 by establishing baits and studying these baits on a regular basis of several times a week. Studying these baits and the bears attending them included viewing activity at the baits, noting the number of bears attending the bait each evening, photographing the bears and keeping records of what we observed. We noted on one evening in particular, that 16 bears were viewed at one bait site. While this seemed very uncommon at first, we found that viewing 8 to 10 bears an evening became the norm. Multiple bear sightings, on the same evening at other baits were also common. We continued to monitor and record the activity at our baits between mid July and late August. Given the success we were enjoying with our baits, I suggested that we share our photographs, movies, and journals with the Ministry biologist, and even went to the extent of offering an invitation to Ministry staff to attend our bait sites to assist them in the study of black bears. Our offer was not well received by Ministry staff. They implied that we were overstating the number of bears viewed and disputed the information we attempted to provide, without viewing photographs, movies and other details of our study. This was very insulting to our hunting group. We are a group of friends who take our hunting very seriously. We run a very organized hunt camp with very strict rules and regulations with regard to hunting safely and responsibly. I do believe that the Ministry officials disregarded very valuable information regarding the bear population in WMU 49 by ignoring our offer to provide assistance by way of sharing our research. As a group, we had spent several hundred man hours in the bush studying these bears. The way I view it, this was a win-win situation for the MNR, especially given the limited resources and funds they have available for the management of Wildlife Management Units and the species within those units. One of the rules of our hunt camp is that we insist that every one must send in the mandatory reporting letters to the MNR regarding the bear hunt. Our group consisted of 13 hunters, all of whom submitted the reporting letter. Seven members of our group received letters from the Ministry indicating that they had not received the reporting letters. This to me is absurd, and I would like to know how this could occur. It makes one feel that reports submitted by all hunters are not being taken seriously, so why do we bother to complete them. We complete them and send them in because it is part of the rules and regulations. We will continue to send in these reports because we are responsible hunters and hope that the reports will be received and taken seriously by Ministry officials. We will continue to study moose, deer and bears as a very important part of our hunting to further educate ourselves as responsible and successful hunters. We will continue to make sustainability and conservation primary areas of concern within our group. Were we successful during the 2008 bear hunt? Absolutely, we earned it through a lot of hard work including study of the bears long before the hunt. I truly believe that MNR staff has no concept of the actual number of bears within the area we hunt and possibly the whole 49 area. I cannot include the other areas of WMU 49 as I do not hunt the entire area, but I do know the immediate area that we hunt that consists of a five to ten mile radius. I have hunted this area for over 30 years and until 2004 had seen very few bears unless it was over a bait. In July of 2007, my wife and I saw four bears over the course of a weekend driving between our cabin and Town. I assume that the increase in non-hunting sightings as well as hunting sightings can be attributed to the cancellation of the spring bear hunt. This seems to be the general opinion of both hunters and non-hunting residents of the area. Hopefully in the future, someone within the MNR will start taking the sincere input of hunters seriously as we all have similar goals with respect to the sustainability of various species and increased conservation awareness so that our children may enjoy the same rights and privileges we as hunters enjoy today.

Bear Attack.......for those who have previously accused me of being paranoid.........and gun happy

Quebec woman dies after bear attack, car crash
A woman has died after being mauled by a bear, and then being involved in a car crash while her husband frantically rushed her to hospital in Quebec.
Forestry engineer Dragos Gavriloaia was accompanied on a trip to the woods by his wife Alexandrina, 46. They were in the forest near La Tuque, Que. Wednesday, when Dragos turned around to find the bear attacking his wife, police said.
He was able to chase the bear away and carry his seriously injured wife to his pickup truck. The nearest hospital was 90 minutes away.
Halfway to the hospital, Dragos lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch.
Bystanders who passed the couple took them to hospital, but Alexandrina was pronounced dead when she arrived.
Dragos is a forest engineer and Alexandrina wanted to keep him company while he worked.
The couple lived in an apartment in Saint-Laurent, near Montreal, with their two adult children.
Residents who knew Alexandrina, a Romanian immigrant, reacted with disbelief to news of her death on Thursday.
"It's shocking," said the couple's neighbour Alex Bejnaru. "I knew this lady for six years and what happened, it's pretty tragic."
Police said they will conduct an autopsy to determine whether it was the bear attack or the car accident caused her death.
Meanwhile, Quebec wildlife officials are reportedly on their way to La Tuque to try and capture the bear.
There have been an abnormally high number of bear sightings north of Montreal this summer. Wildlife officials have said that cool, rainy weather in recent months has produced a smaller berry crop this year. That's left the animals to search for other sources of food.

On my way to work on the opening day of the Turkey season, I observed one of the most comical moments. As I passed a local gas station, I observed a guy in full turkey regalia filling up his Chevy pick up. I then realized that it was opening day for Wild Turkey. Now this is when the comical side comes in; I turned the corner and drove about 3/4 of a kilometre, and there just inside the roadside fence was Old Mr' Tom strutten his stuff.........I'll never know if the two met, but it was almost like the wise old turkey was getting the upper hand.

ATV Logging Arch

Species At Risk

I just realized that I have discovered a "Species At Risk" ...........It's called the "True Canadian Outdoorsman" ..........you know the one who knows the bush, doesn't get lost, knows how to use a compass, saves his own ass in a bad situation. Can shoot a "gun" (oh bad word around Toronto), catch a "Fish" well if he can find any.................since the Ministry has pretty much stopped any stocking programs....including private clubs who are trying their best to make up for what the Ministry of Natural Resources doesn't do. You know....the kind of person that pretty much discovered, mapped and navigated this country. Ah.......such a breed they were........it's truly too bad they are so close to extinction. I haven't read any new Policies that the Government has developed to ensure they don't become extinct. I wonder if the Government has any DNA samples ........you know so if they ever happen along one they're not sure of..........they could always get some hair samples from a hair snare and you know acknowledge that they do exist in Ontario. Oh yeh, I forgot then they would have to develop a Policy to "manage" us...............lmao. Doesn't it just make you laugh your ass off............."Species at Risk" Let's just put it all into perspective...........Reality..........Common Sense.........disappearing terms.......

Black Bears....Bears....Bear Management

Ok, people this is the way I see it; the Ministry of Natural Resources must be marching to the tune of tree huggers. I have worked in North Western BC with Black bears, and Grizzlies. The only person who would for one instant think that the current bear management policy for Ontario is a good one , has shit for brains. It will only be a matter of time; short time before some politicians son, wife, daughter, or other relative gets mauled, killed and possibly eatin before Bear Management Policy in this Province changes. There are more bears in the province of Ontario than the Ministry realizes, will acknowledge or really cares. We own 500 acres and have for over 30 years; in that time we have never seen a bear; well until the last ten...........now there presence is a common occurrence. In 5 square miles last year 13 bears were harvested during the bear hunt. This didn't include the bears that were passed up, or that were not counted as all tags had been filled. Now lets talk about Bears in southern Ontario.....deep south.........Oshawa, Pickering, Omemee (looking in the school windows during school) oh yeh.............perfect! Now onto the Ministry......lets' hire Bear Management Technicians for 5 month's a year to "educate" people how to "Live With" and "Accept" bears in their backyards. Give your flippin head a shake.............A friend of mine lived down a dead end road........his children were 5 & 10 , the school board decided to save money and required his children to walk down a road 1.5 kilometres to catch the school bus. All in the name of saving the school board money....$800,000 in total for making kids in the country walk to catch a bus that used to pick them up at the door. This decision was made with full knowledge that a bear had killed a steer the year before just down the road from his house (confirmed by the Ministry of Natural Resources) and after being informed that a sow and two cubs had been spotted on the road recently. The School Boards response was to send a Conservation Officer to explain to the children if they saw a bear to back away, and gave them a sticker to put on their lunch box........(I love it) their parents weren't home when the CO showed up. I volunteered to go to the School Board to speak as an expert witness, as I have witnessed both Grizzlies and Black Bears in bluff charges and follow through charges......its not something a child would understand............nor would they survive............even with pepper spray.............which unless under the perfect conditions and with a very calm spirit...........isn't "Worth a Shit!" The only way to defend yourself is with a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs or a 44 magnum (my preferred choice) and know how to defend yourself; know the signs of an aggressive bear and be prepared. We were certified to carry when I worked as a Forest Officer in North Western BC and had to pass a course yearly. When I returned to Ontario in 2002 I guided and baited 61 bear Baits a day in Temagami, so don't think that I have no experience.......believe me, I've seen it all. Bear Management in Ontario is way out of wack..........the Ministry is going down a road that will result in not only people getting hurt, killed or maimed, but is also contributing to increased killings of calf moose ............it needs serious study, by people who know what they're talking about, not knee jerk reactions to anti's or non hunters. Rant all you want it's fact..........if you don't like it..........I hope you never run into an aggressive bear......and if you do...you better be prepared........and cell phones don't necessarily work everywhere..............you may be on your own!

So far over the last 20 years our forests have been decimated due to mismanagement, our bear management is totally out to lunch, our lakes are no longer being stocked, (slot sizes) new fisheries management zones, no staff on the ground to collect the data to make sound decisions....policy......., new moose management policy...meetings..........public input.....give your head a shake boys....they haven't got a flipping clue about our natural resources. Now lets bring into the swing of things......Species at Risk.........I'm waiting for the Ministry to finally acknowledge that there are "Native" populations of cougars in Ontario. Look out..........now they will have to come up with a management policy to address this............because they are "A species at risk" . Ok, I could go on for pages and pages......I've been employed in the natural resource field for over 25 years and it all makes me sick.

Rainbows at Hampton

Firewood

This past weekend I spent up north at my parents property cutting firewood. Saturday wasn't the nicest day , however any day spent in the bush is better than a day spent behind a desk. It was a nice get away, lots of sign; moose, deer, and even happened upon a bear den.....with lots of steam coming from its depths. The winds in the fall and over the winter provided more than enough downed wood for a weekend of cutting. We didn't stress ourselves too hard, but still managed to cut a fair amount of wood.

Easter weekend gave me the opportunity to observe some deer up at our farm. The antics of some of the does butting their fawns, raising their legs towards one another, it was hilarious. They truly are amazing animals to observe as they interact, and respond to even the most distant noises.

Its That Time Of Year.......

With the weather forecasting warmer temperatures over the next few days, mixed with rain; it's that time of year! When all the local, avid, if not overly eager anglers dawn their waders, dust off their rods and head down to their favorite stream. With the remaining snow melt and rain forecasted it only goes to say that the rainbows if not already; soon will be heading up our local watercourses. Last year around this same time and on into April, I witnessed numerous anglers with fish in the 5,6 - 12 lb range headed back to their cars. Even though a lot of the watercourses around Oshawa, Bowmanville, Whitby and in general the north shore of Lake Ontario find their way through large developed urban centres............the fish still thrive. I'll keep you posted when they start catching fish, and provide some photos.

Kearney Dog Sledding

Not even a little drizzle could hold back the dogs during the Kearney Dog Sled Races. Lots of spectators and quite a few teams were present for the events on Saturday. Everyone enjoyed the different races ; the food and refreshments provided in the community centre were excellent and provided an excellent place to warm up, have a coffee, hear some music and browse the booths.

Well the weather on Saturday February 7, 2009 could have been a little colder. The snow carving done by John Hetherington, Grace Campbell and Larry Hurtubise was awesome, until around 11:00 a.m on saturday morning, the light rain and winds out of the east took the tip off of the left wing. Quite a few people dropped by and snapped photos, and had their photos taken in front of the piece.

It's Time To Install A Woodstove

In light of the colder winters we've been experiencing and the number of digits in my last fuel bill to heat my house with oil........the decision is in; The woodstove is being installed prior to next fall. More and more people are returning to burning wood to heat their homes now. Some are installing pellet stoves and some are utilizing wood. The new wood stoves are more efficient than in recent years, providing longer burn times and better self cleaning features. I can't wait to sit back and not have to worry about whether or not I can afford to be warm.......I realize its going to take some work on my part. However I could use some excercise, and a day spent in the bush is better than a day spent watching TV. Besides there's nothing better than the sight of a crackling fire on a cold January day.

Driving home from work today I turned off highway 35 north of Pontypool and looked down the embankment beside the road along a field of corn that hadn't been harvested and noticed a flock of about 30 birds. The temperature with the wind chill was about -25c. It just goes to prove how hearty these birds are, and how well they have adapted. I also noticed quite a few other tracks along the field and through the adjacent bush; at first I thought it was cattle tracks. Upon closer inspection I discovered that there was quite an abundance of deer also feeding off this field of standing corn. Short drives , not far from home on cold days , can reveal some good spots for next season. I'll definitely remember this spot.

Coyote Hunting

This time of year can be a great time to do some Coyote hunting. With the colder temperatures, coyotes will be on the prowl looking for rabbits and anything else they can get there chops on. Living on the outskirts of town, I have had them within 50 yards of my house howling, yipping and carrying on like its a party. Just down the road a local farmer has had them after his sheep on numerous occasions. Their numbers are definately on the rise locally and with a decrease in hunting pressure, they are flourishing. Be sure to check the hunting regulations and your local municipal bylaws before
heading out.

If you are considering purchasing a set of these rechargeable "45 kilometre range " walkie talkies........be prepared to only be able to reach a maximum range of maybe 4 to 5 kilometres. Although you may get a little better distance than the smaller units.........these by no means will reach 45 kilometres. I purchased a pair and tried them out, to find out that I couldn't reach more than 3 kilometres. So unless you are looking for no more than 2 to 5 kilometres; you'll have to spend a lot more then $130.00. I took my set back and got a full refund.

Inga Lake has been designated one of the Family Fishing Waters in the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations. Young anglers may have good luck using small lures baited with worms or maggots. Standard flies such as microleeches and doc spratleys tend to do well in the lake. Each year the lake is stocked with 10,000 rainbow trout, usually released in June. Historically, the lake had been stocked with brook trout, however this was not continued beyond 1996.

With all the attention/discussion/rumors etc. regarding cougar sightings in Ontario. I thought I would post this article. Rumor has it that the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources actually released some cougars into the wild to help control the deer population. Now don't get too excited, if you can confirm or deny this rumor...please by all means lets get it out in the open. Now further to my last statement, I have had conversations, read news articles about actual sightings and photos, tracks etc. If you have information with actual photos, sightings etc. I'd be glad to post the information here on my blog as well as on my website. If you have confirmation/documentation regarding the OMNR releasing cougars, I'd definately like to see that too. If I receive any responses, I'll definately post them here. Feel free to leave your comments. The cougar in the photo was from British Columbia and was shot as it had killed two horses.

This isn't really the forum, but I had to speak up, The Liberals, NDP and Bloc think they can do a better job than Prime Minister Harper. Didn't we just have an election and Harper got back in with a slightly higher minority than last time. You try and pull this crap and we'll all be using pesos and standing in bread lines. Late Season Deer

I've been out quite a bit since we've started receiving snow and noticed large scrapes........very large tracks in those scrapes..which leads to "Really Big Bucks" My favorite time to go out deer hunting is after the gun hunt, especially if its actively snowing. The Big Boys are on the move and their senses aren't quite as quick as usual. I've observed more large bucks during weather like this and at this time of year over any other time. So I guess it's time I strike off to my favorite hunting spot......I'll let you know if I catch up to one of the "Big Boys"

Big City Oshawa Buck

The ability for White tail deer to adapt to our cities and developed areas is amazing. The valleys and green spaces left within our residential and industrial areas provides all the habitat necessary for deer like this to survive and flourish. This photo was taken outside of our office which sits south of Bloor Street, south of the 401 in south Oshawa (Oshawa Creek valley) This is nice to see, however when wildlife populations start to grow and their numbers begin to rise, vehicle/animal crashes go up, deer jumping through windows in businesses and dwellings, and people walking the trail systems encountering animals. Not all people realize that deer, coyotes, bears, moose and other animals they may encounter especially during the breeding season can pose a serious threat/safety concern. If you do encounter animals on trails or in green spaces you should never approach them and definately don't feed them. They are amazing to observe and photograph.......enjoy our greenspaces.

Don't have to wander to far....to shoot a moose

There's one good thing about being a little older when moose hunting. That being you spend less time in the bush and more time sitting in your favorite chair by the fire. This was an actual experience during the 2008 moose hunt in Ontario. My father and a friend of his went out early opening day of the moose hunt.......returning to the house for coffee and a rest. Early in the afternoon my fathers friend decided he wanted a drink of pop, so he opened the back door of the house stepped out on the porch; looked up and 40 yards from the house ........there stood a bull. Very calmly he turned , walked back into the house and said, "Someone should get a gun and shoot that bull moose standing behind the house." So my father got up picked up his 32 special, loaded two shells stepped out on the porch and dropped it. Hunt complete........ya gotta love it!

I was sitting on my watch listening to the dog run a deer and listening to the other hunters on the radio. As I looked around I saw a bear come from the woods. It was instant, I took the safety off and I raised the gun. I took the first shot as he stepped around the tree, I missed. Then he ran 25 yards and got his front to paws on a log and stood up to see where the shot come from; I then shot him between the 2 front shoulders. He went to run away and I shot again, missing the 3rd shot. He ran about 30 yards up a hill then rolled down about 15 yards.

Now for all you nay sayers the proof is in the photos......check them out, this guy has the smile to prove it. Now without giving away this guys local......or exact hotspot I have only to say this.........."These fish do exist in Ontario" Now you say yeh sure........well I have found lakes that you would think would only hold bass or pike.......and low and behold I have caught fish like the ones in these photos. Never second guess the potential for small beaver ponds or lakes to hold trophies like these. All I can say is happy searching............and thank you to Chris Hughes for sharing his experience.

ATV'ing Apsley Style

Well I spent a full day on the trails around Apsley/Coe Hill; don't ask me where I was after the first fifteen minutes I didn't know north south east or west. I was with some locals who knew basically where they were.........within a tanks distance of Coe Hill. Thank God we had a GPS and some trail maps. The maze of roads trails yadda yadda.........194 kilometres later we were home. A couple of beers, some steak potatoes and more suds..................snooze time. It was one of those experiences you never forget, the trees were starting to turn, the weather was not too hot, the trails not too dusty, and the scenery and views were awesome. if you want to see some back country be sure to check it out...........don't forget your GPS, some maps, extra fuel and some snacks.........and don't go by yourself, its always nice to have someone there in case you break down or get stuck........

The problem is not law abiding hand gun owners. It's the flow of illegal handguns and other weapons from the US. It's also our court system, our society, and our leniency on young offenders. It's past time to make the necessary changes to the laws and sentences for committing crimes with handguns. You kill someone and are found guilty; its an automatic 25 years no parole, no sideline deals no get out of jail free card. Now lets get rid of the over sensationalism of gun crimes and put it all in perspective.......How many people are stabbed in Toronto everyday....How many of these people die or are maimed for life? Do you even hear about these incidents? How many doctors mistakenly kill innocent people under their care? Do we hear of these stats?

We took a brief wander through our property and found that a few of the traditional scrapes were already being tended. So what better time than the present to set up your tree stand. Giant Hogweed – General Information

What Is Giant Hogweed?

Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is a perennial member of the parsley or carrot family originally native to Asia but now found naturally in South Central Ontario. It closely resembles cow parsnip and Queen Anne’s Lace except, as its name suggests, it is characterized by its large size and may grow as high as 6 meters. Aside from its immense size, Giant Hogweed can also be distinguished by its stout, dark reddish stem that can grow 5-10 cm in diameter. Leaf stalks are spotted and can produce a leaf that can expand to 1.5 meters across (see picture below). Each leaf is deeply grooved or divided. Stems and stalks are hollow and produce course hairs around a blister like area on the plant. In summer, small, white flowers form together to make up an umbrella-shaped head that can reach 1 meter in diameter.

Where is Giant Hogweed Found ?

Giant Hogweed can be found in scattered localities across Southern Ontario however, isolated plants have been documented as far north as Haliburton County. Although it may grow in a wide variety of habitats, it is most often found along roadsides, other right of ways, vacant lots, wet areas (stream and river banks) and waste areas.

Why be concerned about Giant Hogweed?

The blister like areas on stems and stalks leak a clear watery sap containing chemicals classified as psoralens, which can sensitize the skin to ultraviolet radiation. Exposure to sunlight following contact with these chemicals causes severe burns that usually result in blistering and painful dermatitis. Blisters can develop into purplish or blackened scars sometimes up to 48 hours after exposure. In some cases, skin contact can lead to recurring dermatitis and eye contact can lead to temporary or possibly permanent blindness.

Who is at increased risk of exposure?

Employees working outdoors in areas such as roadsides, other right of ways, near streams or river banks are potentially at risk of exposure to this plant.

How can I protect myself?

· Review the above pictures so that you are aware of what the plant looks like.
· Avoid contact with the plant.
· Wear a long sleeved shirt and long pants to avoid skin contact.

What should I do if I come in contact with this plant?

· Wash the affected area with soap and water.
· Keep affected areas out of direct sunlight.
· Seek medical advice at the earliest opportunity.

I read a lot about Chandos Lake so thought I would give it a try. Four hours of jigging, tube jigs, lures, trolling, top water and the only fish we caught was this bass..........ten minutes after we launched. We did have a small pike follow a lure..............so over the side ......figure eight...........followed it but wouldn't hit. We're going to have to return and figure this lake out..........one day.......maybe.........

Well we fished Chemong, we fished the Indian River, we fished Chandos.........no fish; couldn't buy a fish. So the significant other says "Why don't we just put the boat in at the launch in town. So I figured since my suggestions hadn't worked to well..........we'll give it a try. So in at the launch at town...........drive 150 yards, tie up to the railroad trestle...........first cast with a tube jig; she lands the first small mouth. Fifth cast with a tube jig........second fish.........a few minutes later.the third. I did have a nice keeper on for 3.2 milliseconds........but my luck this year hasn't been the best. I did land a small.......9 inch smallmouth but through him back. So I guess I'll let the significant other chose our next destination.

Once again a black bear has shown that they are not to be trusted. Having worked with both grizzlies and blacks; I have had numerous encounters with both blacks and grizzlies. Does anyone relate to what I'm saying? Yes I have a beagle and she hates bears......loves food...loves food....her nose rules her being! They truly are great dogs if only there was a way to disconnect their nose from their brain. She has been hit/runover by a car, got loose numerous times, got stranded on a stump out on the tide flats surrounded by glacial tide water and had to swim for shore......I'm beginning to think that she has 9 lives. I just recently spoke to someone who informed me that they have owned two beagles one lived to be 21, and one 20 years of age. Being that she is only seven that leaves me 13 more good years of laughs.............cleaning up after her when she gets into the garbage...........and putting up with her snoring, farting and being a putz! Although she tries my patience, one thing i can say is that I have no crumbs anywhere in my house, car or yard. If there was it was eaten within 1.5 milliseconds of hitting the ground. She's the best cooks helper..........drop something....it disapppears. First dog I've known to eat anything and everything................I now have her on the Jenny Craig weight loss diet. All kidding aside she's a great dog.

Well I got my quad, put some miles on it, satisifed with it's performance. Now it's time to shift gears; get the boat out, check the tires, grease the hubs, change the gear oil, buy the fishing licence, pull out all the gear and hit the lake. I think to start the season out on the right foot, we'll go for some lakers first. I have my favorite little lake that is long, narrow and offers some nice lakers without having to be out in the wide open water, fighting waves and freezing your >>> off. Early season lakers are usually pretty easy to take. I use a small to medium sized rapala with three large weights. It gets me down to around 20 ft. ; and that's all it takes. I'll post some photos in a week or so.............so you can see if I was successful.

This past long weekend two young men lost their lives in Ontario waters. Everyone who ventures outdoors not only in a boat but even hiking or tenting should know the dangers and techniques to not get into trouble. Wear life jackets, don't take unnecessary risks, don't drink and operate a boat, ATV, or other motor vehicle, and be prepared for emergencies. Our condolences go out to their friends and family.

The Suzuki King Quad 450 4x4 is an awesome machine. Good in the mud, good in the water and all with stock tires; it makes you wonder what a set of mudders would do? Hill climbing with two riders, mud bogging, quickness off the start, smooth acceleration.........I can't see much more I would want from a quad. After doing quite a bit of research , looking at the competition and knowing the Suzuki reputation, I finally made my decision.......this was the machine to buy. This is one of the fastest selling machines in 2008. A lot of dealers who usually sell Honda's, Kawasaki's etc. are stocking this model in the dozens....because everyone is wanting them. Especially now with the value of the Canadian dollar price is driving people to the dealerships in droves. Do your research, check out the internet, search for Suzuki King Quad reviews.....I couldn't find any bad complaints. Riding two people is very comfortable due to the independent rear suspension (adjustable), four wheel drive is a snap to engage, just press the button on the right handle bar, if needed there is also a front dif lock. If speed is your thing , off the start to 50 miles per hour doesn't take long and is as fast i will ever need to go........with more power still available.

Well spring must officially be here; on Friday March 28, 2008 I witnessed at least nine fisherman with approxiamtely 12 rainbows in the 4- 7 lb range being taken back to their cars from Oshawa Creek. A definite sign that spring has sprung, so it only goes to say that all the rivers along the north shore of Lake Ontario are full of fish. So take the rod along to work, and spend your lunch hour tying into a couple of bows.

Paluski Ripple..my new fishing kayak

Well I've done my comparison shopping, looked at , sat in, compared features, prices, and reviews. My choice a Paluski Ripple. They make a version geared to the fisherman and duck hunters also use them; a dark green almost mauve color. I intend on spending a lot of time exploring some lakes that until now have been impossible for me to get to with my 14ft. aluminum. Rod holders, and other attachments are available to outfit the kayak for fishing.

Well I've noticed that the local Turkey population is doing quite well. I've noticed numerous birds, out in the fields and roosting in trees along some of the back roads. I don't think the population is hurting in the least bit. It should be a really good year for local hunters in and around Peterborough and the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Well after riding one, and reviewing the literature I've come to a conclusion; well not exactly. It would be nice to have the sport model too.........you know for those days when ya just wanna have some fun at high speed. The Can-Am line up is pretty awesome. Watch the videos on their website where they compare speed, pulling power and torque to the competition...you'll be convinced this is the machine for you.
